Full course description

The Commercial and Economic Drivers of Health and Justice badge course, part of the Public Health Lecture Series at Touro University California, offers a unique opportunity to delve into the commercial determinants of health and social inequities. This self-paced, 6-8 hour online course is designed for public health professionals, students, and advocates interested in understanding how economic and corporate forces shape public health and deepen justice disparities.

In this five-part series, experts from public policy, health, and social justice fields lead discussions on the roles of industries such as food, tobacco, alcohol, prisons, and fossil fuels. Participants will gain insights into how these sectors contribute to health disparities and perpetuate social injustices. The series features a keynote session by Nicholas Freudenberg, MPH, DrPH, who will examine how corporate interests fuel public health challenges and injustice. Subsequent sessions will explore the influence of various industries, from the food sector’s impact on health inequalities to the public health implications of the prison and fossil fuel industries.

Course Components:

  • Watch Series Lectures: View live or recorded lectures from the Public Health Lecture Speaker Series, featuring field experts.
  • Reflective Assignments: Complete a reflection after each session to deepen your understanding and apply concepts to real-world public health challenges.
