Full course description
This continuing medical education (CME) course is designed to meet the Nevada state requirement for healthcare providers on the responsible prescribing of controlled substances, with a focus on opioids. Participants will explore the epidemiology and impact of opioid misuse and abuse, understand the legal and regulatory framework specific to Nevada, and sharpen their knowledge of evidence-based prescribing practices. Participants who complete this course are eligible to receive two AMA PRA Category 1 credits TM or AOA Category 1-A credits. This course fulfills the Nevada requirement for two hours in Misuse and Abuse of Controlled Substances; Prescribing of Opioids; or Addiction.
Objectives:
- List situations in which the mandates for the treatment of pain with controlled substances is truncated
- Know the requirements for informed consent applicable to the patient when treating with a controlled substance
- Describe the statutory prescription medication agreement elements and when patients are required to sign the agreement
- Know the additional requirements when using opioids for the treatment of pain
- Describe the Board of Pharmacy rules and regulations regarding the prescribing of controlled substances
- Know the requirements, both State and Federal, to be authorized to prescribe controlled substances for pain
- List medications useful in the treatment of Opiate Use Disorder
